We’ve been talking lately about the importance of having a good number of Twitter followers before engaging with potential consumers, and great ways to increase that following number, but we also need to address something you should refrain from in your quest to grow your Twitter following: buying followers on Twitter.
There seems to be a false correlation that some make in terms of Twitter follower numbers and the credibility one has on Twitter. However, while it’s true that you’re more likely to be seen as a credible resource with a few-hundred followers, there are some downsides to paying for thousands of followers for your Twitter network.
The first question you need to answer for yourself and your business is what is the marketing goal of your Twitter account? Is it to engage with the audience available on this platform? Or is it simply to increase brand awareness and have your name out there on another social network?
If it’s the first two, the biggest thing to keep in mind before deciding to buy followers on Twitter is that buying followers doesn’t necessarily mean that they will engage with you. In fact, it’s been found that several services that allow you to buy followers provide users with “bot” accounts, users with an egg as their avatar and no active tweeting; they’re simply there as an added follower number.
The second thing to keep in mind is that others can track how many fake accounts a Twitter user has through apps like Fakers by Status People. If you’re trying to build authenticity and integrity on Twitter, this can be easily destroyed if a user sees numerous bot/fake accounts following you.
At the end of the day, you’re better off engaging with Twitter users and gaining new Twitter followers organically. Create compelling and interesting tweets that include a call to action (an added link or picture of some sort) to provide added engagement. Quantity is important in a sense that you’ll want to have more than a handful of followers before engaging with potential consumers, but only to an extent.
Save your money and focus on gaining followers that are actually interested in your brand and want to engage with you. While having many followers can increase your klout score, having fake followers doesn’t move the needle very much.
